Gene Source UK is a cattle breeding company which brings dairy and beef genetics to UK farmers from a range of new and independent world-wide sources.
We are part of Global Network Genetics which is a partnership of like-minded, privately owned breeding companies based across Europe and North America which have come together with common breeding objectives and without the constraints typically imposed on big corporate business. This means the customers of Gene Source UK will not only benefit from the creative thinking of its UK founders, but can directly gain from the expertise and knowledge of top bull breeders making their own independent breeding decisions around the world.
Amongst the global partners of Gene Source UK are Glaz-Way Enterprises LLC from California and DairyGen from Germany, ZooServis from Czech Republic all of whom will be familiar to breeding enthusiasts.
We have a portfolio of carefully sourced dairy and beef genetics from some of the top herds around the world, including in the UK, the USA and Europe. Many of the dairy bull dams and their family members have been proven in the most rigorous, commercial situations in 2,000-head American herds where they have risen to the top on the strength of their robust conformation, good conception rates and fertility, and their general profitability and ease of management. Added to this are deep and consistently breeding cow families behind the bulls, some with a remarkable 18 consecutive generations of Excellent dams in their back pedigree.
Jointly founded by Chris Freeman, who has been a highly successful dairy farmer and cattle breeder in his own right, and Ryan McPherson, who has broad experience across the farming industry, the expanding team at Gene Source UK pledges to offer face-to-face customer service and breeding advice as part of the package. “We have spent the past six months scouring the world for cattle genetics which meet our expectations and now we are ready to hit the ground running with our portfolio of around 50 bulls,” says Chris Freeman.
“It’s our firm view that dams make a difference and we see that if there is a fault in a female line, it will come back and bite you in future generations,” he says. “That’s why we have prioritised depth of pedigree in our bull selection, while not overlooking the genetic indexes required by the modern producer. “We do not strive to have the next number one bull but aim for realistic values from realistic pedigrees which we will offer at a fair price,” he says. “We also strongly value fertility and pack a minimum of 30 million high motility sperm cells into each semen straw to maximize conception rates.”
Ryan McPherson adds: “We don’t simply want to sell to our customers, but want to work with them to improve their herds and produce the type of dairy or beef to suit their system.
“Within our portfolio are bulls to suit every need, from intensive, traditional or grazing-based dairy genetics of every breed to grass-fed or concentrate-reared beef from native British or continental breeds.”
